Key takeaways

  • Operating profit = MRR − payment fees − hosting − other cost of revenue − operating costs.
  • Example: 120 customers at $29 is $3,480 MRR; fees are $136.92, hosting $150, operating costs $1,300, leaving $1,893.08 a month at a 54.4% net margin.
  • Gross margin in that example is 91.8%, in the usual 70–90%+ range for software.
  • Fixed costs of $1,450 against about $27.86 left per customer mean 53 customers to break even.

Hustlay project cards showing profit and margin for each product
Hustlay gives each product its own P&L, with its share of the shared hosting bill.

Shared hosting and tools make per-product profit hard to see. Hustlay splits them across your products and shows MRR next to real profit.

Track SaaS profit
How it works

From MRR to operating profit

  1. MRR = paying customers × average price per customer.
  2. Payment fees = MRR × fee % + customers × fixed fee per charge.
  3. Gross profit = MRR − payment fees − hosting − other cost of revenue. Operating profit = gross profit − operating costs.
  4. Break-even customers = (hosting + other cost of revenue + operating costs) ÷ what one customer leaves after fees, rounded up.
